The Best & Worst Marvel Movies

Avengers Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War is right around the corner, so naturally someone had to create the first-ever best and worst listing of the MCU films. You won’t find anyone else on the internet doing this, so don’t even bother looking. Since there are now roughly 600 movies in the MCU with a new one coming out every 3 days, I’m going to just provide my bottom 5 and top 5 from this ever-expanding cinematic universe. Let’s begin:

#5 Ant Man
1 / 11

#5 Ant-Man

Ant-Man is about as perfectly average as a movie can be. It’s the Goldilocks of films. Not too bad. Not too good. It’s just right. Paul Rudd is a likable lead and the heist-style approach helps it stand out a little from the others but it’s still very formulaic and doesn’t stack up next to the heavier Marvel hitters.

#4 - Thor - The Dark World
2 / 11

#4 Thor: The Dark World

I don’t hate Thor 2. I just don’t remember anything about it. It has a lot of things I normally enjoy, such as; gods punching things hard, Loki doing tricky magic… I guess it really just has two things I enjoy. Portman? We’re done here.

#3 - Captain America- The First Avenger
3 / 11

#3 Captain America: The First Avenger

I have never read a single Captain America comic book so it’s unclear to me if this is what fans of that series wanted. It’s not what I wanted, I know that for sure. The period piece concept was cool, but the intentionally campy direction didn’t work. Evans would go on to win me over in later films in the franchise but in this first outing, nothing really pops.

#2 - Iron Man 2
4 / 11

#2 Iron Man 2

Some people like Iron Man 2 and I there is nothing I can do about that. I almost put this dead-last because of how much of a quality dip there is from Iron Man 1 to whatever this was. It did deliver us Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow though and I will always be grateful for that.

#1 - The “Incredible” Hulk
5 / 11

#1 The “Incredible” Hulk

It’s not incredible in the slightest, hence the clever use of sarcastic quoting. It’s never been done before, much like a ranking of Marvel movies. The best thing I can say about this film is The Hulk never once fights a giant, mutated poodle like he did in the previous attempt at the property.

#5 - The Guardians of the Galaxy
6 / 11

#5 The Guardians of the Galaxy

I knew nothing about these crazy characters and instantly connected with their personalities and misadventures. It was a somehow more nerdy version of The Avengers. It also really stood out for director James Gunn’s hand-picked music selection and witty comedy.

#4 - Thor- Ragnarok
7 / 11

#4 Thor: Ragnarok

I was not expecting this movie at all. After two lukewarm films in the Thor series; this didn’t have much for momentum behind it. It turns out, completely changing the tone from dark and serious to a funny, buddy comedy featuring The Hulk is just what Thor needed.

#3 - The Avengers
8 / 11

#3 The Avengers

The movie everyone was waiting for didn’t disappoint. I had a blast with the theater audience when this hit in 2012. The scale was incredible, the action moments were unforgettable and the MCU from that point on really became an unstoppable juggernaut.

#2 - The Avengers- Age of Ultron
9 / 11

#2 The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Putting this above the 1st Avengers will undoubtedly turn some people off but I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to put down a completely forgettable list of Marvel movies to be dissected and picked apart. The pacing, the team and the visuals are all improved upon and Ultron is a fun villain. That’s pretty much an air-tight case as to why this is better than the first.

#1 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
10 / 11

#1 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I’m sure this won’t be the #1 pick on most people’s list but then again, no one has ever done a ranking of MCU movies before; as I’ve stated multiple times now. GOTG2 further fleshes out our leads, builds upon the crazy world they live in and somehow balances comedy, action, drama and heart with great success. An easily re-watchable movie for me with another killer soundtrack.

Well, that’s my list. I know; it’s truly remarkable. Perhaps this list will look far different in a few years from now. We shall see. No one else does them so I guess I should keep up with it. Let’s do a review.

Black Panther
11 / 11

Black Panther

Some may be surprised I didn’t put Black Panther in my top 5. I happen to like the film quite a bit. It has some pacing and effects issues but the beautiful locations, unique African inspired culture, wonderful cast and great soundtrack easily put this in my top 10. I give it 8.5 out of 10 Black Panther Emoji’s.

Marvel has done an amazing job building up this cinematic universe with no signs of slowing down. I thought the superhero fatigue may have kicked in by now but I’m still excited for what’s on the horizon and hopefully I’ll be adjusting this list very soon with the release of Infinity War and all the slated phase 3 Marvel movies.
