I’ve been dealing with acne since high school, but now that I’m in my mid-twenties I can’t exactly blame “puberty” alone as the main culprit anymore. Unbeknownst to us, we make skincare mistakes every day, mistakes that can eventually lead to acne growth. My skin is far from perfect, but since I’ve learned to avoid these mishaps I can say that my skin is much clearer than it has been in years.

Not Cleaning Your Phone

Having a phone these days is pretty much a standard in life and if you’re anything like me, you are on your phone for pretty good majority of the day. However, have you ever thought about the dirt and bacteria that could still be lingering on your screen? That’s right – dust, leftover cookie crumbs, oil from your finger tips, dead skin cells, etc. All of a sudden you have an incoming call, you bring the phone to your ear and then…well I’m sure you can just imagine the rest. A good way to avoid any of the drama is to clean your phone regularly with a disinfectant or makeup wipe. I do this right before bed so that when I wake up in the morning, my screen is squeaky clean.

TIP: Answer your phone and turn on speakerphone when you can.

Not Washing Your Bedsheets

The bed is my friend, however the bed, especially your pillow and bedsheets, are just another unlikely area that harbors tons of bacteria. Wash your sheets every 1-2 weeks to keep them fresh and clean. Side sleepers will definitely see a difference in acne reduction as well. TIP: If you don’t wash your hair everyday, make sure you sleep with your hair up on Day 2 and 3 as the oil in your hair will be soaked into the pillowcases.

Sleeping with your Makeup On

I cannot stress the importance of taking your makeup off before bed, but I get it – life happens! I like to keep makeup wipes next to my bed stand. It’s perfect for nights when I’m just feeling extra tired or coming home from a night out. As for my daily night time routine, I always double cleanse. I go in first with an oil then an antioxidant facial cleanser along with my Clarisonic brush afterwards.

Touching Your Face

I’m so guilty of this, but I’m trying to be better, I promise! Your fingertips are full of oil and bacteria and you don’t want any of that on your face. This is all self-discipline so get into the habit now! If you can, have a friend call you out for whenever you pick at your face, especially pimples.

TIP: If you absolutely have to pop (although I don’t recommend it), please don’t use your finger tips! Use sanitary cautions and use a specially made acne removal tool if you can.

Not Drinking Enough Water

If your body is happy and hydrated, your skin will definitely thank you for that! Although I can’t vouch that water can heal acne, I can say that it will keep you hydrated and satisfied enough to stay away from unhealthy foods and beverages than can cause acne in the first place. TIP: to make  your life easy, invest in a good water bottle and bring it with everywhere, everyday. Make sure you get your 8 glasses in!
